2012 was the first year of the Hybrid electric era and the Audi Sort Team Joest had entered two2 of the new Hybrid R18s and two of the older diesel powered R18 Ultras. Major competition was also coming from Toyota's TS030s and Rebellion Racing's Lola B12_60s.
The winning no.1 car led from pole position and was driven by Marcel Fässler, Andre Lotterer and Benoit Tréluyer, with the no.2 car of Rinaldo Capello, Tom Kristensen and Allan McNish coming home in second place - a lap behind the winners.
