1961 Lotus 18

Following the successful format of the Coopers in 1959 and 1960, Lotus produced the Lotus 18 - positioning the engine behind the driver. With developments in tyre technology requiring a stiffer chassis and suspension mounting at the heart of the 18's design, this was a more sophisticated machine than the Cooper T51 and T54 grand prix cars.

In the hands of Stirling Moss, the Lotus 18 was a fast, nimble and predictable race car which enjoyed considerable success in 1960 and 61.

The car shown here is the 1961 Monaco GP winner, where Moss held off the challenges from the much more powerful Ferrari 156, exploiting the Lotus's nimble handling qualities to the full.
