1954 Mercedes W196R

The W196 won back-to-back World Drivers Championships in ’54 and ’55, achieving victories in 9 of the 12 races entered.

Powered by a fuel injected 2.5 litre V12, developed from the DB 601 engines used in the WW2 Messerschmitt Bf 109E fighter plane, the car featured two different styles of bodywork on the same chassis.

The closed wheel, all aluminium streamliner body for super-fast circuits like Reims, Silverstone and Monza or the open wheel variant used everywhere else. With a driver lineup featuring Juan Manuel Fangio and Stirling Moss, the W196 dominated both seasons, delivering Fangio’s 2nd and 3rd World Championships.

The car depicted is Fangio’s 1954 Belgian Grand Prix winner – at Spa Francorchamps.
