Bugatti Type 57G 'Tank'. 1937. Winner.
Having enjoyed considerable success in Grand Prix racing, Ettore Bugatti and his son Jean decided to try their luck in long distance endurance racing. The type 57G was an aerodynamically superior version of the type 57 series of road/sports cars - featuring a naturally aspirated inline-8 cylinder engine and an aluminium body. The car was entered in a number of sports car races in 1936 and 37, winning at Le Mans driven by Jean-Pierre Wimille and Robert Benoist.
The car shown here was one of only 3 Bugatti Type 57 G tanks built, and is the only car which has survived. A longer wheelbase development version with the designation Type 57C tank won Le Mans in 1939 - the last race before WW2.
